Do you ever stop and wonder, are the people that I care about now, going to be the same people that I care about later? I find myself asking this question every day. We meet so many individuals in our life, it's so hard to keep track of them all, especially when you are the kind of person that makes friends so easily.
There are family members, friends, friends of friends, friends of friends of friends, friends that are sometimes friends but not really friends, co-workers, bosses, teachers, classmates, I mean the list of people can go on for hours. (If you haven't noticed, I like to list things. Lists create significance, therefore, I use them.)

It is a habit of mine to make a lot of friends, and become really close to them all. The problem with that is trying to communicate with them that it becomes so difficult to keep up with. Can you imagine trying to remember every single birthday of every single friend on your friends list on Facebook? It just is not realistic. Granted, Facebook tells you when it is someone's birthday, but who really likes a wall post that screams happy birthday with far too many exclamation points and smiley faces? Birthdays tend to lose that special feeling that comes with them, when everyone and their brother knows your birthday thanks to a little side note on someone's news feed. But I digress.
Ironically enough, we live in an era where there is an excessive amount of communication all around us.

There comes a point when you essentially have to manage your friendships, kicking out some people that are in your life (that should NOT be there in the first place) and accepting within yourself that you just cannot be friends with the world. Friend management may be difficult for some people, like myself, but you just have to understand that people will come and go out of your life. It is a part of living.
Whatever the case, being a decent person is still required among society, because you never know what it could do for you. Besides, there is far too much work in just ignoring everyone and their problems. Sometimes, you just have to help or be there in case they need someone. Friend or not, it is still important. Because at the end of the day, you may not be willing to help someone if they called you on the phone in dire need of your help, but would they help you if you needed it?

Dear cousin Chase,
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more on this topic. True, we do have face book that helps us make and create new friends as well as reconnect with old ones from our past. It also allows us to find out who will always be there for us in a time of crisis to edify one another. For those that do, it builds everlasting strength and love for one another and for those who do not, it shows us where they stand in our lives. Do we wait for them? Sure, but not for too long. Life is too short and we must do whatever we can to make the best of it in whatever we are pursuing to make this society as better place for us all, one that has full equality for this planet's own inhabitants as well as for a selected few that are more determined to drive out the rest of us.
True friendship is what wins out in the end, IMO. It is when a person is dying and a true, best friend only knows what the person is truly like and can smile knowing what he or she has to say without even mouthing the words. It is then that the heart knows and, as the song goes by Celine Dion, "The Heart will go on...", :-D!
I got friends in low places
